How much can we get off on this used car?

Hi i've been looking at a used mazda protege5 at a dealership they are asking $8995 for it. The car has 63844 miles on it, it's a stick shift and they have had the car for a while because i guess no one really wants a stick any more. We recently bought a brand new car from the dealer for $17000 and we know the general sales manager. I went on kelly blue book and they say the trade in value for it in excellent condition was $5500 and the retail from a dealer was $9000 how much do you think we should offer for the car and try to haggle it down? Lastly what do you think about the car? Thank you very much for your help

The price they're asking for the Protege5 seems to be about right for the mileage, but you can probably get them to come down at least $400-500 especially if they have had it for 60 days or longer.

I'd offer $8,000 and wouldn't go higher any than $8,500. Even if it's a %26quot;creampuff%26quot;, it still has that manual transmission, and people just don't want to bother with shifting while they're on their cellphone or drinking their coffee.

The problem with buying from a dealer is there is a set value. The person who traded it in was given a set dollar amount and that is what the dealer has in the car. From being in the car business offer them what NADA says on clean resale is and go from there. The car truly is only worth what you want to pay for it. That is what determines the cars value. Better to offer low and work up than to over buy, Compare local individual sales in comparison. Private owners are easier and willing to negotiate without all the hassle. You can get a better loan from a private back or credit union.
