How does importing a car to Canada from the States work?

I've recently located the car I want, however, it is south of the border in Detroit. The car is used and being sold for about $2,000 USD.

What costs would be involved with bringing this car back into Ontario, and what would need to be addressed? I want to know if it is worth pursuing, or if I should just be patient and wait for one to be sold close by. Thanks in advance!

You would have to pay GST and pay a fee for Canada Customs forms. The importation forms require that the car passes a safety. Then, you would have to get your car licensed in Ontario (temp permit from NY would get you home).
