How long do I have until I have to smog my car?

I bought a car last week and went into the DMV today to register it. They told me that I had to smog it, even though it had been smogged in January 2010. I paid the registration fees, then took the car down to get it smogged and it did not pass. The tags don%26#039;t expire until March 2011, so do I just have to get it smogged before then or is there a sooner date that applies.|||you have to fix it and smog it or the car can%26#039;t be put into your name. every time the title is transferred it must be tested again.
